CIA Was Involved in The Benghazi Attack

It has been learned that one week prior to the Benghazi attacks that resulted in the deaths of four Americans, CIA Director David Petraeus met with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. This finding, reported by Hurrieytat the time, further bolsters brand new claims by Seymour M. Hersh, the man who broke the Abu Ghraib prison scandal story in 2004.

In early 2012, the Obama administration, along with the administration of Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reached an agreement that would have Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia provide funding for an operation run by then CIA Director David Petraeus (the Petraeus Operation), according to Hersh’s report. The purpose of the operation, carried out by the CIA and Great Britain’s MI6, was to move weapons from Libya into Syria, using back channel ‘rat lines’.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who’d recently met with the House Intelligence Committee just days prior to this death, met with Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin within two hours of the attack.

In January of this year, a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) made news when it released an 85-page bipartisan report on the Benghazi attacks. According to Hersh, there was an addendum or “highly classified annex” to the report which detailed the Petraeus operation. As to who was issued this highly sensitive document, House Speaker John Boehner and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers were reportedly among them.

According to a ‘former intelligence official’ cited heavily by Hersh, the classified annex revealed that the Special Mission Compound where Ambassador Christoper Stevens was murdered was nothing more than a front for negotiating the weapons transfers from Libya to Syria through Turkey.

Last year, after outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified in front of a Senate Committee about Benghazi, Boehner appeared on a radio show one day later and admitted to having knowledge about weapons being shipped to Turkey:

The question asked of Boehner had to do with an exchange between Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Clinton, who testified that she had no knowledge of weapons being shipped from Libya to Turkey. According to Hersh’s source, not only was Petraeus overseeing an operation that was doing just that but the operation itself involved Hillary Clinton’s State Department, as evidenced by Stevens’ presence in Benghazi:

If Boehner had classified information about weapons being shipped to Syria from Libya, via Turkey as far back as January of last year, how long before that did he know about it? Despite a majority of House Republicans(185 – 38) who are calling for a Select Committee to investigate what happened in Benghazi, Boehner continues to refuse to appoint one. It stands to reason that if Boehner knew what was going on in Benghaziprior to the attacks, he wouldn’t want the truth about Benghazi to come out now.

That leads to another one of the eight congressmen who would have received the Senate Intelligence Committee annex report (according to Hersh’s source) in his capacity as House Intelligence Chairman – Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI). That Rogers hasn’t come forward with this information is suspect enough; ditto for Boehner. However, as reported in November, Rogers also admitted that Ambassador Stevens appeared before his committee shortly before the Benghazi attacks.

As reported, there was a series of curious events that took place in less than two weeks recently.

  • March 24th: Catherine Herridge reveals former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell’s employer – Beacon Global Strategies – is home to several close Hillary Clinton allies and former staff director for the House Intelligence Committee under Rogers, J. Michael Allen. In the report, circumstances surrounding Allen’s departure raise ethical and possibly legal concerns.
  • March 28th: Rogers announces that he will not seek re-election in 2014; he will be resigning to become a talk radio show host.
  • April 2nd: Morell testifies in front of House Intelligence Committee. It’s learned that he consciously made the decision to protect the State Department when crafting the talking points, which is convenient in light of his job at Beacon.
  • April 4th: The Washington Free Beacon reports that a CIA official committed suicide by jumping from a five-story building.

According to Hersh’s source, another consequence of the Benghazi attack was the cessation of the Petraeus operation. Turkey’s Erdogan was still funding the effort but the CIA was out and Erdogan wasn’t happy about picking up the slack, which allegedly made him desperate for action from the Obama administration on Syria. According to Hersh, there was a dinner meeting at the White House in May of 2013 that included Erdogan, his Intelligence Chief and Turkey’s Foreign Minister. Secretary of State John Kerry and then National Security Adviser Tom Donilon flanked Obama at the dinner.

White House meeting in May, 2013. Seated Clockwise beginning with John Kerry at 12:00; Barack Obama, unknown female, Tom Donilon, Ahmet Davotoglu (Turkish Foreign Minister), Erdogan, and Hakan Fidan (Turkish Intelligence head)

Hersh, who contends that the dinner meeting was called by Erdogan to press Obama to act in response to his ‘red line’ being crossed, writes:

In spring 2013 US intelligence learned that the Turkish government… was working directly with al-Nusra and its allies to develop a chemical warfare capability.

Al-Nusra = Al-Qaeda = Barbarians = Slaughterers of Christians.

The Infamous August 21, 2013 Chemical Weapons Attack
There is no arguing that Turkey’s Erdogan was desperate for a shift of momentum in Syria. Not only had the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Mursi been removed from power in Egypt but attempts by the Obama State Department – along with Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham – to have Muslim Brotherhood leaders released, failed miserably by August 7th, as reported.

Beginning on August 27, 2013, reported on the evidence that Syrian rebels were the ones responsible for the chemical weapons attack six days earlier. Since publishing that report, we have updated it with additional reports that further bolster those claims. It can be said with a high degree of certainty that Bashar al-Assad’s regime was not responsible for those attacks. There is far more evidence to implicate the rebels and, by extension, Erdogan’s regime.

Erdogan fingered in Syria's chemical weapons attack last year.

Erdogan fingered in Syria’s chemical weapons attack last year.

This leads to a motive by Erdogan to prompt action by the Obama administration, as Hersh writes:

Without US military support for the rebels, the former intelligence official said, ‘Erdoğan’s dream of having a client state in Syria is evaporating and he thinks we’re the reason why. When Syria wins the war, he knows the rebels are just as likely to turn on him – where else can they go? So now he will have thousands of radicals in his backyard.’

Perhaps the money quote in Hersh’s piece about who was responsible from the chemical weapons attack comes a bit later from the “former intelligence officer” he cites as a source:

“We now know it was a covert action planned by Erdoğan’s people to push Obama over the red line.”

If Hersh is correct, there are members of Congress who must know it. If the U.S. presence in Benghazi was about arming Syrian jihadists through Turkey, countless innocent Christian lives have been ended as a result. Any member of Congress who knew that before the September 11th attacks in Benghazi has blood on his hands and any member of Congress who continues to remain silent about it is complicit in war crimes.

The right thing to do would be for any self-respecting member of Congress to call out Turkey for what it is and call for the cessation of a U.S. alliance with that country.

So far, there have been no takers.

Petraeus Investigation still open to Keep him Quiet about Benghazi?

In testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Attorney General Eric Holder was pressed about why the case against ex-CIA Director David Petraeus is still under investigation. Indications are that members of Congress are concerned that the case is still hanging in limbo to prevent Petraeus from revealing what he knows about the Benghazi attacks.

If, as has been relayed by, the details of an extensive report published in the London Review are correct, Petraeus was the man in charge of the logistics of an operation in Benghazi that involved shipping weapons from Libya to Syria through Turkey and that this operation involved a high level of coordination with Turkish intelligence. The report goes on to say that at least eight members of Congress were informed of this in January of this year, when they received a ‘classified annex’ to the much publicized bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report on Benghazi.

According to the London Review report, the following members of Congress would have received the classified annex in January and know of the operation: House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH); Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY); House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA); Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV); House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-MI); House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD); Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA); and Senate Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).

If the information attributed by a ‘former intelligence official’ cited in the London Review is correct, it would mean that Rogers and Ruppersberger were armed with this incredibly important information when ex-CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell testified before their committee on April 2nd. Five days prior to that testimony, it was reported that Rogers would not be running for re-election in 2014.

As has reported, there is significant – borderline overwhelming – evidence that the U.S. was engaged in weapons transfers out of Benghazi at the time of the attacks on 9/11/12.

Here is the April 8th exchange between Holder and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who sits on the House Judiciary Committee:

[Watch] Benghazi Heat On – Michele Bachman Grills Former Acting CIA Director

Rep Michelle Bachman (R-MN) grills former acting CIA acting director Mike Morell, about his testimony as to a protest being the initial cause of the September 11th 2012 attacks in Benghazi and his changing of the talking points.

She cites physical evidence and places the responsibility for a more administration-friendly version of the talking points squarely with Morell.

He does his best to offer a defense, but seems unaware that one of the people he “quotes” to shore up his position, the chief of station, had been interviewed the previous day by this same committee behind closed doors. The chief of station’s version of the events and his opinion of the root cause do not concur with the way Morell attempts to characterize them.

The September 11, 2012 attack on the Benghazi mission is an indictment of Hillary Clinton’s capacity to serve as Commander in Chief.

The Senate Select Committee’s Benghazi Report (The Report) makes clear that the deaths of Amb. Christopher Stevens, State Information Officer Sean Smith, and Navy Seals Glen Doherty and Tyrone S. Woods could have been prevented on the day of the attack. Above all, their deaths would not have occurred but for Obama and Clinton’s dangerous, Islamist-friendly, and unconstitutional military action against Qadhafi. Even worse, it is clear that Hillary put political “optics” above the security of American lives on the eve of a Presidential election. In that sense it’s a bigger cover-up than Watergate.

Yet former conservative and now infamous Clinton sycophant David Brock, founder of the George Soros-funded front group Media Matters, would have the public believe that Hillary’s deadly failures in Benghazi are non-existent and any criticisms of her, even taken directly out of the bi-partisan, year-long investigation Senate Report, are simply smears. Along with David Kirkpatrick’s shameful New York Times story, which was thoroughly debunked a day later by Fox News from witnesses “who were on the ground” the night of the Islamist attack, it is clear that the Clintonistas are in cahoots to protect Clinton from facing any scrutiny during her 2016 White House bid.

The Report is prima facie evidence that Hillary failed to answer the 3:00 PM call she faced on September 11, 2012 once the attack started on the Mission. Finding #1 of The Report makes clear that Clinton ignored the “ample strategic warning that [the] security situation in eastern Libya was deteriorating and that U.S. facilities and personnel were at risk in Benghazi.” On September 5th, six days before the attack, AFRICOM produced a report stating, on page 11, “disarray in Libya and a likely focus by authorities on pursuit of Qadhafi loyalists is likely allowing jihadists in Libya freedom to recruit, train, and facilitate the movement of fighters and weapons. The threat to Western and U.S. interests and individuals remains high, particularly in northeast-Libya.” Benghazi is the largest city in northeast Libya.

The Report also makes clear that a top Clinton lieutenant denied Amb. Stevens’s requests for greater security at the Benghazi Mission. Finding #2 of The Report states that “(t)he State Department should have increased its security posture more significantly in Benghazi based on the deteriorating security situation… including two incidents at the Temporary Mission Facility on April 6 and June 6, 2012.” Both of these attacks included IEDs being directed by Islamists at the Mission.

The Report explains that Amb. Stevens and other State Department officials outlined “concerns via cables to State Department headquarters about the security of the Mission compound and made several requests for additional resources.” [p. 14] Yet Clinton’s State Department was filled with “confusion over who, ultimately, was responsible and empowered to make decisions on both policy and security concerns.” [p. 16] Simply stated, Clinton was too incompetent to run a proper Department whose bureaucracy could prioritize the safety of her subordinates.

Not only did Hillary’s incompetence bungle the Mission’s security, but direct evidence exists which proves that top State Department officials under Clinton denied the Mission proper safety protocols. Internal State Department memos unearthed by Fox News show that Clinton’s Under Secretary Patrick Kennedy signed off on an action memo “that green-lighted the Benghazi operation” with the caveat that the Mission be “exempted… from mandatory physical security standards” of a Consulate.

It strains credulity to believe that Hillary was not aware of the action memo, especially since Clinton misled the public on a “diplomatic victory” in Libya as early as November 2011 when she “was quick to announce that the U.S. committed $40 million to help Libya secure and recover its weapons stockpiles.” This would be the same month when The Telegraph reported that the Al Qaeda flag was pictured “flying above the Benghazi courthouse building… alongside the Libyan national flag.”

Hillary would have the public believe that her Benghazi incompetence could be washed away in her “bias for action,” as the carefully crafted introduction of Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes’s HRC quotes an unnamed source. Yet the same introduction quotes Hillary telling Kennedy, “the undersecretary who oversaw diplomatic operations,” that “she want(s) to see” to brief “her team” on the April 5, 2010 assault on an American compound in Peshawar. That would be twenty months before Kennedy signed the deadly Benghazi action memo.

The Report also makes clear that the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence “found no evidence that significant actions were taken by the State Department between August 15, 2012, and September 11, 2012, to increase security at the Mission(.)” [p. 16] Yet The Report redacts eleven security upgrades “quickly” made by the CIA in its Annex “due to the threat of continued attacks against Western personnel in Benghazi(.)” [pp. 19-20] The CIA Annex would repel an attack with loss of US lives the same night our mission was stormed in a precise, military-style attack and four Americans died.

Clinton’s Benghazi Mission did not even install additional surveillance cameras it had received “because the State Department has not yet sent out the technical team necessary to install them.” Further, the camera monitor in the guard force booth “was inoperable on the day of the attacks due to a needed repair by a technical team.” The Report makes clear that “the lack of security enhancements contributed to the security breakdown at the Temporary Mission Facility the night of the attacks.”

While it is no surprise that Hillary or her husband would have any qualms on lying to the American public about the cause of Benghazi attack, or anything else for that matter, it is disconcerting that someone who believes she is capable of serving as Commander in Chief would lie directly to the father of the fallen Navy Seal Tyrone S. Woods on the cause of his son’s unnecessary death. Yet in a memorial service days after the Islamist attack, Hillary approached Tyrone’s father Charles and assured him that the Obama administration was going to “arrest and prosecute” the man that made the scapegoated YouTube video critical of Islam.

The Report does not mention the video once. The Report makes clear in FINDING #9 that any report of a “protest at the Mission facility” was “erroneous” and “caused confusion and influenced the public statements of policymakers.” [p. 34] In fact, “there were no protests outside the Temporary Mission Facility prior to the attacks(.)”

The attack was a multi-pronged, sophisticated assault which was coordinated by Ahmad Abu Khattallah, who is a leading member of the Al Qaeda-affiliated group Ansar al-Sharia. A Fox News source who was on the ground describes the Khattallah’ s operation as a “direct action planned attack” with “(o)ne guy… shooting, one guy… running. There (were) guys watching the gates… The bosses on the ground were pointing, commanding and coordinating.”

450 days after the attack, Khattallah walks freely around Benghazi. The final recommendation of The Report demands that “the U.S. Government must swiftly bring the attackers to justice, in spite of the unwillingness or lack of capacity of the Libyan government to assist in this effort.” [p. 43] The government which Obama and Clinton installed is prohibiting the FBI from operating in Libya. Fifteen Libyans who were cooperating with the FBI have been assassinated. And the FBI’s $10 million reward was not even publicized the first eleven months after it was issued. Clearly, the Obama administration does not consider the attackers a high priority.

One last question remains open from The Report: was the attack on the Benghazi Mission carried out with U.S. weapons? The Intelligence Committee’s press release states that “the U.S. government cannot rely on local security in areas where the United States has facilities under high threat or where the host nation is not capable of providing adequate security.” We know that Amb. Stevens was forced to hire local security militias for protection due to Hillary’s denials of his security requests. The Report explains that Amb. Stevens believed that the local Libyan militia members would provide the “least bad option.”

This is a question on which the American public deserves to know the truth. And yes, Hillary, it does matter!
